Buddhism
Buddhism was a religion founded by Prince Gautama of India, who changed into a monk after he saw all the suffering in the world. For six years, the prince searched for the meaning of life, gaining followers as he went. When he did find the meaning of life, he became the Buddha, or the Awakened One. Buddhists are expected to follow the 4 Noble Truths and The 8 Fold Path, teaching people that life is full of suffering, and if people stop wanting things, suffering can end. For example, the motto for Buddhism is "To not want is to not suffer." People also believe that when one dies, their soul can be reborn into a new body, and if you have good karma, you might reach Nirvana.
Taoism/Daoism
Born in 606 B.C, Lao Zi was the founder of Taoism. Lao Zi believed that people should live a simple life, aiming for laughter and joy instead of fame and power. He thought that everyone should worship nature through meditation, and that laws would cause people's actions to worsen. Finally he felt that harmony comes when yin and yang are balanced. Taoists have no concern for the after-life (death) , for their motto is, "Keep it simple," and "Just be."
Confucianism
Confucianism was a philosophy founded by Kong Fu Zi, later known as Confucius. Confucius believed that proper conduct, respect, morality, hard work, and education all lead to a stable society. That harmony equals loyalty, honesty, faithfulness, obedience, and that everyone should worship their ancestors. Confucius also said that rulers needed to have good morals to win their subjects' trust. The motto of Confucianism was based on The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you." Meaning that everyone had to be a good person. Even though Confucianism does not say what happens after death, people believe that there is a heaven and that we should focus on being a good person here on earth.
